WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE, April 2018
Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 34th meeting on the 3rd Sunday of April from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. There were 6 people present at the meeting, which Anne Skyvington convened.
Some of us had been to the Rockpool Publishing Master Class at Waverley Library on the 9th of April, and we discussed it and agreed that it was well presented and that the event was worth attending.
Rockpool Publishing has two arms. One is a mainstream section that specialises in mind-body-spirit, health, family, sport and recreation non-fiction books. This arm pays your publishing bills. The other arm is called Rockpool Self-Publishing. If they think your book has a chance of success, they will help you to self-publish. But the writer pays the bill. Note that Rockpool Self-Publishing considers both fiction and non-fiction manuscripts. Both Rockpool arms accept unsolicited manuscripts.
We also discussed Susannah Fullerton’s forthcoming talk on Jane Austen in Waverley Library Theatrette on 6 May at 2pm. One of our members, who has been to Susannah’s previous talks, said she is entertaining and knowledgeable and a delight to listen to. All tickets are $10 and to register interest, send contact details to fowlcontact@gmail.com (The event is supported by FOWL.)
During our feedback session, each participant presented a piece or pieces of writing for feedback. These included 2 reports on Susannah Fullerton events at the State Library, 3 novel excerpts and 3 memoir pieces. The ensuing feedback was enthusiastic and, as always, helpful to those who presented and listened to the pieces of writing.
One of our members, Cleo Lynch, showed us her just-published, handsomely bound collection of memoirs called The Bed and other byways. Congratulations to Cleo for producing this inspiring collection of memories for her family to read and enjoy.
Last, but not least, FOWL will be hosting a combined Poetry Group and Waverley Writers Meet and Greet on the 2nd of October, in the morning. It is envisaged that members of both groups will read excerpts of their own poetry and prose, or perhaps even swap pieces. This event will celebrate FOWL’s 25th anniversary. Details have yet to be worked out. Please save the date.
Our next meeting will take place on Sunday the 20th of May 2018, from 2-4pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. We are looking forward to seeing you at the library then.
Regards
Susan Beinart (Liaison), Waverley Writers of FOWL
