WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE, March 2017
Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 23rd meeting on Sunday 19th March from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. There were 7 attendees at this 2nd meeting for 2017, which Anne Skyvington convened.
The meeting began with the question: ‘What is a hybrid work that crosses genre boundaries?’ This was prompted by a written guideline for a writing competition from the Australian Association of Writing Programs (AAWP) website, associated with the University of Western Australia (*https://uwap.uwa.edu.au). This was kindly introduced to us by one of our members. We discussed this question in detail, covering hybrids such as fact mixed with fiction and, specifically, the blend of factual and made-up memoir popular with some writers today.
We were pleased to hear that one of our members has written a piece that we hope will feature in a future edition of FOWL Deeds. Waverley Writers would like more member contributions for this FOWL quarterly newsletter. Book reviews, inspiring literary thoughts and short reports on local creative activities are ideal. The desired length for a piece of writing is about 250 words. If members have written something along these lines, please let us know and we will help you to submit it.
During the meeting, all seven of us read and obtained feedback for our individual pieces of writing. These included memoir, novel and short story excerpts. It was another satisfying and supportive meeting with lots of amazing feedback.
There was also enough time to discuss the fact that, as Fowl members, we will not be expected to pay for the venue if we wish to launch our publications at Waverley Library. However, any author wishing to take advantage of this generous opportunity will be expected to pay for any extras such as refreshments.
Next month’s meeting (April) will not take place due to it being Easter Sunday.
So our next meeting will occur on Sunday the 21st of May, from 2-4pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Regards
Susan Beinart (Liaison, Waverley Writers of FOWL)
