WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE, March 2017
Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 33rd meeting on the 3rd Sunday of March from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. Despite scorching heat on that particular Sunday, there were 5 people present at the meeting, which Anne Skyvington convened.
This was our first time together after Waverley Writer Maureen Mendelowitz held her successful book launch of ‘The Rock’ at Waverley Library on Monday the 12th of March. The library turned out to be the perfect venue for Maureen’s bursting-at-the-seams launch and there were some general FOWL members as well as many Waverley Writers present. Maureen had asked some of her fellow Waverley Writers to help launch her book, and these members felt honoured to do so. Most of the books were sold at the launch. The remaining books were snapped up during the following week.
After discussing our enjoyment of that successful launch during our regular Sunday meeting, each participant presented a piece of writing for feedback. This included 3 novel excerpts, 1 memoir piece and I short story. Although there were fewer participants than usual, and therefore more time for consideration of each piece, we still needed timekeeping to ensure that all had a chance to participate.
During the session, we also reviewed the 1000-word limit that we impose at meetings. Various suggestions about increasing the word limit for particular participants at certain times were discussed. One suggestion was that, time allowing, a writer could go up to 2000 words by negotiation at any particular session. However, it is important to remember that most participants come to us to acquire feedback on the spot and so we should try to accommodate all. This could be an ongoing conversation – at this point nothing is set in stone.
Our next meeting will take place on Sunday the 15th of April 2018, from 2-4pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. We are looking forward to seeing you at the library then.
